About this event
The Firehouse Arts Center is proud to present “Sari ki Saree, The Whole of Saree,” a solo exhibition by mixed‑media artist Ria Sharma. In this vibrant and tactile collection, Sharma transforms rescued sarees into striking geometric compositions that honor her cultural heritage. Sparked by the hesitation she felt when cutting into a saree, that instinct became the conceptual heart of this body of work, leading Sharma to preserve and use entire intact sarees within each artwork.
Through layered pleats, borders, blouses, and intricately patterned pallus, she creates immersive surfaces where ancient motifs meet contemporary abstraction. Sharma’s signature cubic figuration draws on her background as a civil engineer. Strong geometric lines provide structure, while the softness of repurposed silks, embroidery threads, and hand‑hemmed elements evoke the warmth of familial traditions.
